Last Call: Bob's Bids Boston Adieu After 50 Year Run

Bob’s Southern Bistro, home of the Boston’s finest southern cuisine and live jazz, was recently sold and closed its doors on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 after 50 fabulous years in the South End.

Before Bob’s last call, the legendary establishment hosted a full slate of events, including a Best of Bob’s jazz concert and (2) authentic New Orleans-style ‘Jazz Funeral’ Sunday brunches.

Bob’s owner Darryl Settles cited a need to focus on expanding outside business interests (such as the newly opened and enormously popular Beehive – www.BeehiveBoston.com, real estate interests, BeanTown Sounds – a entertainment booking agency, and developing other new opportunities) as well as a desire to spend more time with his family and friends, as factors in the decision to close Bob’s.

“Selling Bob’s was a difficult decision, but after nurturing and expanding the concept for 17 years, I owe it to my family and colleagues to take a step back,” said Settles. “I am extremely proud of everything we have done in the community to promote and celebrate the southern culture of great cuisine, music and hospitality.”

Founded in 1957 by Robert “Bob” and Dottie Morgan, Bob’s transformed itself over the years from a lunch counter into a soul food kitchen into Settles’ vision of a southern bistro, complete with Boston’s liveliest selection of live jazz. As a result, Bob’s has held a special place in Boston’s heart as the embodiment of the true South End experience, one that bridges the gap from the ‘old days’ to the present.

Over the past year, Bob’s Southern Bistro celebrated its 50 year anniversary, including its 500th Sunday Jazz Brunch Buffet, its annual Mardi Gras Celebration, and a Youth Jazz Series. For more information or questions please email us at info@BobsSouthernBistro.com.

About Bob's Southern Bistro

Darryl Settles purchased Bob’s in 1990 at the age of 29, maintaining and subsequently redefining one of Boston’s truly unique dining establishments. Located at 604 Columbus Avenue in Boston's Historic South End, Bob’s Southern Bistro has been a Boston institution since 1957 and more recently, a destination for the region’s best live jazz and traditional southern cuisine.

Bob’s was founded by Robert and Dottie Morgan as a small counter service at Mud Kelly’s ‘Big M’ Nightclub on Massachusetts Ave. In the early 1960’s, Morgan moved Bob’s to its present location.
